Nanna Strawberry looks forward to the following occasions at which the author offers
readings of Nanna Strawberry Stories to children and adults, and purchases if desired.
Friday 27 April Great Sankey St James CE Primary School Morning Assembly.
A very enjoyable occasion for Nanna Strawberry. The lovely children
happily took part in role play and National Anthem during Assembly
and I then visited each year group in their class room to read various books.
I am very impressed at the quality of questions by children of all ages.
Several discounted sets of 3 sold, from which £20 donated to school funds.
Friday 11 May Lady Lever Art Gallery to participate in Memories of the Past.
I was advised that either Stagecoach buses 1 or 2 from Sir Thomas Street
would drop me off a similar 5 minute walk from the Gallery, so I took No 1.
The driver informed me bus No 2 would have been better because it
goes into the Village. I certainly found the walk from the No 1 stop long
and difficult, while pulling a book laden shopping trolley, so on leaving
I took the No 2 near bowling green, which was certainly closer to the
Gallery and a more pleasant route back to Sir Thomas Street. .
The group leaders, Jillian, Emma and Mark and participant were all in place
when I arrived. We focused on book 6 (Remembering The Young Queen)
and the role play conluded with a fantastic rendering of National Anthem !
I only sold one book because the group went strainght into a film of
several royal weddings over the decades which was very interesting...
My thanks to everyone concerned for inviting me. Audrey
Tuesday 22 May Huyton Library. After School Readings + crafts 3.30-4.45pm
This was a happy occasion, combined with crafts, when the children made
lovely decorated crowns. They had enjoyed Nanna Strawberry's reading of
her book Nanna Strawberry Remembers The Young Queen, and extracts
from a few other stories. Some took part in potato and spoon games!
Monday 18th June - Croft Primary School, all day: Assembly + year groups
It was a privilege to meet the pupils at School Assembly for reading and
role play of Book. 6. On this occasion I then remained at table display in
the hall and each year group was brought to the hall for 30 minutes each.
Years 5 and 6 had opportunity to role play games from Easter Fun Bk 7.
20 books were later sold, for which £20 was donated by NS to school.

Revisiting Blacklow Brow School Book Writing project
On Monday 26th March, I spent a wonderful day with my young friends at Blacklow Brow
School in Huyton, this time to participate with encouragement and advice to each class in turn
during the school's book writing project. The style and format of Nanna Strawberry Stories
was a good model for the children to choose a character and activity and then to write about
it in their story book as if it had actually happened..I spent 20 minutes in each class, seven in
all, with a lunch break shared with Caitlin and school prefects. What a treat that was! Bright
company, cheerful red table cloth covered with dishes of tasty rolls, crisps, assorted fancy cakes
and strawberries. Then more class visits. A boy in one class asked "How old are you Nanna Strawberry?"."Very old" I replied. " "yes, but how old?" he repeated. "82" said I.
"82!!" he hollered, "that IS old, My Nan is 67", "Well, mine is 73" said a classmate and soon
The War Of The Ageing Nanna was underway, children competing to have the oldest Nanna,
until their teacher brought the class back to stories.
I have to say, I have gone through the grandma stage and have now reached great grandma status
which requires a greater age. Great fun ! My final class visits were to Year 5 and 6. By then these
classes had worked all day on their books and in Year 6 I was privileged to have several books
read to me by their authors. All very imaginative and well written. Clearly some future famous
authors among their ranks.
To complete my visit to Blacklow Brow School a special assembly was held in the hall for all the
classes so the children could thank me for spending the day with them. I can only say that Nanna Strawberry thanks you all for your affectionate welcome and for creating such fun themes for each
of your stories. It was a privilege to spend a day with such creative and well mannered authors.
My thanks also to your Head Mrs Williams, Mrs Ferragan, Literacy, all class teachers and my
helpful escort, Laura who made sure I was in the right class by the right time.

Blacklow Brow Primary School greets Nanna Strawberry
Remembering 6th February 1952 from entries in my teenage 1952 diary, while still a schoolgirl,
and describing them to an assembly ofr Blacklow Brow pupils and staff on the same date in 2018
I enjoyed a wonderful experience at Blacklow Brow,, my identity as Nanna Strawberry clearly
giving the children a special experience. They enjoyed hearing how Sophie had given me this
name because she could not say my name Audrey. Then I gave the children an exercise in
shorthand which my class was doing in 1952. They copied my hand movements while I drew
shorthand symbols with my finger in front of my face, to read as:
'Dear Sirs, Thank you for your letter'.
All the children copied my mirror image writings with great enthusiasm and sensible application.
Then I explained why Princess Elizabeth was in Kenya with Prince Philip in 1952, due to the
King being unwell.
I then read my story to them about the manner my class was informed of the accession of
HM The Queen after her father King George the sixth died while she was in Kenya. The Queen
immediately became our Monarch.. We all went through the story again with role play led by
Mrs Williams to give the children a sense of the importance of this historic event.so long ago.
'Please stand girls, I have some very sad news for you'
All the school immediately stood to attention. So did I.
'King George the Sixth died early this morning.
'The King is Dead. Long Live The Queen'
The schoolchildren repeated in firm voices
'Long Live The Queen'/
The role play was completed by a wonderful rendering by all the children and staff of the
National Anthem, words and music provided by a recording. The children stood to attention,
backs held straight, serious faces all forward facing, and singing in absolute unison in young
clear voices. 'God save our gracious Queen...' Truly beautiful and most memorabil.
Quite incredible for me to experience this 66 years after being present for the original
annoucement and recording those events in my 1952 diary.
It was a privilege to share this special anniversary with the children and staff of Blacklow Brow
Primary School and an experience for them of a major historic event for their country and
our wonderful Queen .
Thank you all.
