Remembering 6th February 1952 from entries in my teenage 1952 diary, while still a schoolgirl,
and describing them to an assembly ofr Blacklow Brow pupils and staff on the same date in 2018
I enjoyed a wonderful experience at Blacklow Brow,, my identity as Nanna Strawberry clearly
giving the children a special experience. They enjoyed hearing how Sophie had given me this
name because she could not say my name Audrey. Then I gave the children an exercise in
shorthand which my class was doing in 1952. They copied my hand movements while I drew
shorthand symbols with my finger in front of my face, to read as:
'Dear Sirs, Thank you for your letter'.
All the children copied my mirror image writings with great enthusiasm and sensible application.
Then I explained why Princess Elizabeth was in Kenya with Prince Philip in 1952, due to the
King being unwell.
I then read my story to them about the manner my class was informed of the accession of
HM The Queen after her father King George the sixth died while she was in Kenya. The Queen
immediately became our Monarch.. We all went through the story again with role play led by
Mrs Williams to give the children a sense of the importance of this historic event.so long ago.
'Please stand girls, I have some very sad news for you'
All the school immediately stood to attention. So did I.
'King George the Sixth died early this morning.
'The King is Dead. Long Live The Queen'
The schoolchildren repeated in firm voices
'Long Live The Queen'/
The role play was completed by a wonderful rendering by all the children and staff of the
National Anthem, words and music provided by a recording. The children stood to attention,
backs held straight, serious faces all forward facing, and singing in absolute unison in young
clear voices. 'God save our gracious Queen...' Truly beautiful and most memorabil.
Quite incredible for me to experience this 66 years after being present for the original
annoucement and recording those events in my 1952 diary.
It was a privilege to share this special anniversary with the children and staff of Blacklow Brow
Primary School and an experience for them of a major historic event for their country and
our wonderful Queen .
Thank you all.

the anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952.

The readers will have to guess which stories they belong to.
Sophie does love Boy though, her much loved rag rabbit which
goes everywhere with her. She loves Baby Sister best and calls
her 'Livvy' because she cannot say Olivia. Sophie is pleased that
she is Big Sister and her hands are bigger than Baby Sister's hands.
Sophie does enjoy hearing all about herself though.
'Once upon a time there was a little girl called Sophie'
That was a nice story about nice times..
Then Mummy suggests they all go a walk to the lake.
She pushes Olivia in her pram, with Nessie on her lead,
Sophie pushes dolly and B oy in dolly's pram, Nanna
walks behind holding Sophie's safety lead.while by the lake.
Livvy, Boy and Nanna Strawberry are great names given by Sophie.
BOOK 6 NANNA STRAWBERRY REMEMBERS THE YOUNG QUEEN
... and schooldays
Most of the story in Book 6 is from the author's 1952 diary in which
Audrey recorded the momentous events at that sad time. Her
shorthand class had to stand to attention when a teacher brought
the news that King George VI had died early that morning. The new
Queen was rushing home from Kenya where she had been representing
her father when learning of his death. She was only 25, just 9 years
older than schoolgirl Audrey. Two days later Elizabeth is proclaimed
Queen by countless Town Crier's throughout Britain and beyond, to
herald the start of the new reign. Sixty six years later, the Queen is 91 and
Audrey is 82, named 'Nanna Strawberry' by her first great grandchild
because Sophie could not say Audrey. 2018 marks the 65th anniversary
of the young Queen's Coronation on 2nd June 1953.

World Museum blog
'Author Audrey Wilson visits World Museum' Blog 16th December with photo of
Audrey holding her book in the Shop, The shelves are filled with exciting toys and
games, with children's books displayed in one corner and scientific books in the
opposite corner. Great fun to visit after an adventurous visit to all the museum exhibits.
When Audrey last visited just before Christmas, a family from Australia was grouped for
a family photo and she offered to take it to include the photographer too, which was much
appreciated. She then drew the family's attention to her two books in case they made a nice
souvenir to take back to Australia. Mum was delighted to see New Brighton and the ferry in
book1 as illustrated by Vladi and that Christmas book 4 was both written and illustrated by Audrey
and she promptly bought one of each, which Audrey offered to sign. She felt proud and honoured
to do so. Audrey then enjoyed a cup of coffee in the cafe.. Books 3 and 4 are also on sale
