Nanna Strawberry offers book readings, provides list.

Now that schools are planning their re-opening, Nanna Strawberry would welcome invitations to take part in book readings or group projects, within the protective guidelines against coronavirus.

Nanna Strawberry stories were written by author Audrey Wilson when her first great grandchild could not say 'Nanna Audrey' so called her 'Nanna Strawberry'. This encouraged Audrey to write stories for children by Nanna Strawberry.

The target was a series of twelve short well illustrated stories drawn from her experiences with children over the course of her long life. Each story has its own colour theme on front page logo and back cover, and contains an introduction to the background of the story.

Most have appeal for parents and grandparents too who can relate to similar tales, so two blank pages are included for readers to add their own experiences.

The titles achieved for series of twelve as follows:

Book 1 – The Magical Naming of Nanna Strawberry ...and a visit to the seaside

Book 2 – Nanna Strawberry makes a badge ...and has tea with Sophie

Book 3 – Nanna Strawberry goes Horse Riding...and has a happy birthday

Book 4 – Nanna Strawberry shares Christmas with an Angel ...and all her family

Book 5 – Nanna Strawberry tells stories to Sophie ...and meets her baby sister

Book 6 – Nanna Strawberry remembers the Young Queen ...and schooldays

Book 7 - Nanna Strawberry remembers Easter Fun ...and egg rolling

Book 8 – Nanna Strawberry remembers Billy ...Joan's cheeky strawberry roan pony

Book 9 – Nanna Strawberry remembers Crabbing...and the Fun Machine

Book 10 – Nanna Strawberry remembers Key Fishing ...and heroic Grandad

Book 11 – Nanna Strawberry remembers Shetland Pip ...and his young friends

Book 12 – Nanna Strawberry goes to a Wedding ...and bakes a cake

The above books can be purchased directly from Nanna Strawberry for £3.99 per book (+ £1 P&P)  OR three books for £10.00 (+ £2 P&P). Full set of twelve books £45.00 (+ £5 P&P). Free delivery to schools with donation to school funds.

LAUNCH BOOK 12 at b,acm

EXCITING LAUNCH AT BLACKLOW BROW PRIMARY SCHOOL ASSEMBLY, 18TH DECEMBER, OF THE FINAL BOOK IN THE TWELVE NANNA STRAWBERRY STORIES.

Nanna Strawberry Goes to a Wedding.... and bakes a cake

Author Audrey Wilson writes of her recent participation in the School's Christmas Fayre, 13 December.

"It was lovely to be so warmly welcomed by pupils who recognised me from previous visits and several enjoyed buying another book from t he Nanna Strawberry series. I look forward to returning on 18th December to read book 12 to Assembly, then visits to each class, and enjoy two hour long workshops"

These stories began in 2016 after Nanna's great grandaughter, Sophie then aged 2, was anxious because she could not say Nanna's name 'Audrey' so called her 'Nanna Strawberry' !  Sophie was very relieved and happy when she saw that 'Nanna Strawberry' really liked her new name, so Sophie called it out very loudly all through their visit to New Brighton with Sophie's Mummy, Emma, who was Nanna's eldest grandchild.

So in January 2016, Nanna wrote her very first story, which became Book No 1 of a series of 12 stories.

The Magical Naming of Nanna Strawberry...... and a visit to the seaside'

Nanna Strawberry is thrilled that Mrs Anne-Marie Feriggan has invited her on behalf of Blackblow Brow School to visit on the 18th December to launch Nanna's final book 12 at the School Assembly, and then to follow this with a story writing project with children selected from two year groups, to discuss Nanna's Christmas traditions as described in Book 4

'Nanna Strawberry shares Christmas with an Angel... and all her family'.

The children will then describe their own Christmas traditions which they will write down to create their own story book with help from Nanna Strawberry.  That is going to be great fun, very exciting! A lovely start to Christmas !  Thank you Mrs Ferrigan, colleagues and pupils for sharing your special Celebration Day with Nanna Strawberry. You all deserve a celebration for winning the Salvation Army's county-wide schools'
competition to see which was best at recycling !  The huge amount you recycled was F A N T A S T I C !!

When we think about it, writing about happy traditions is also a way of recycling them for others to share !

See you soon, love from Nanna Strawberrry (author and illustrator Audrey Wilson).

NANNA STRAWBERRY AT GREENBANK SCHOOL FAYRE

I am looking forward to meeting children I have met previously and hope they visit me at my book signing table in the school hall.   I am really pleased to be introducing my latest and new book which completes my target for twelve books in all.  'Nanna Strawberry Goes to a Wedding....and bakes a cake'.

Happy Christmas everyone !!

LAUNCH 'Nanna Strawberry Goes to a Wedding'

LAUNCHED AT 'SMATTS DUO' WEDNESDAY 4TH DECEMBER 2019
DURING SEDBERGH TOWN'S CHRISTMAS LATE NIGHT OPENING 5-7pm
with lots of activities along Main Street where traders welcome you with special treats
and the Town Band entertains.  Santa will be present too. Sue and Matt are organising
a Christmas buffet with light refreshments which may require pre-bookings.

Nanna Strawberry's book display will be at the window table next to doorway, so
please pop in if you would like to buy a signed copy of Book 12.

This newly published story completes the 12 book series of Nanna Strawberry Stories,
well illustrated anecdotal stories drawn by the author from many childhood experiences
throughout my long life.  Starting with 'The Magical Naming of Nanna Strawberry' which
was inspired at age 80 by my great grand-daughter Sophie, then aged two, who could
not say my name Audrey so called me 'Nanna Strawberry'.  So it is fitting that the final
story about a family wedding should include Sophie as Flower Girl for the Bride-to-be
at her wedding in Maytime.  Bringing the collection of stories to their full circle, starting
in the present then dipping in and out of previous memorable events including family pets
and activities, the final one coming back to the present for a happy celebration involving
the whole family. By which time ' Nanna Strawberry'  has become 84 years of age and
great grandmother to three great grand-daughters and two great grandsons. Fantastic !

My heartfelt thanks to all my readers who have bought one or more books from the
series and encouraged me towards my target of twelve to complete the series.

EDUCATIONAL FOOTBALL

Drawing on the experiences of my joyous day long visits to the schools listed
throughout my blog, my impression is that they are filled with happy
confident children under the calm supportive supervision by their Head
and teaching staff.  They are taught to be courteous, attentive, and
encouraged to participate with inquisitive enthusiasm. I applaud these qualities.

To me, those qualities are the foundations of their school life and ongoing lives.

Goodness knows what examples were received during recent tv news bulletins about
Parliament and some opposing MPs of all parties.  Some from all parties preferred
being loud voiced rebels to the dignity of conducting themselves with mutual courtesy as
'honourable' Members of Parliament honouring democratic voting outcomes as elected to do.

They could take some lessons from the schools I refer to now.
Their children and staff do interact with honourable mutual courtesy despite the
various economic backgrounds in the areas they serve and serious shortfalls  to
school budgets. Good examples in behaviour do count.

Something very good is going on in most primary schools. All politicians should
ensure they are properly funded for the advantage of ALL schoolchildren who will
one day be the responsible adults of the future, some of whom may even become a local
councillor or Member of Parliament, or a doctor, lawyer, nurse, dentist, pharmacist,
teacher, retailer, farmer, craftsperson, skilled tradesperson, emergency responder,
administrators of vital services, charity worker, author.....     and hopefully future parents of
of children who will continue to have the same opportunities we want THEM to have NOW.
But not on the basis of being electoral footballs during the coming General Election !
There is always good reason for respecting and maintaining good outcomes, improving poor
ones,  instead of sacrificing the good with the poor ones at every wholesale political change.

I will always uphold you.

INTRODUCING FIRST NANNA STRAWBERRY STORY

BOOK 1   THE MAGICAL NAMING OF NANNA STRAWBERRY...
.....and a visit to the seaside

The following extract is drawn from opening pages

When Nanna Audrey looked out of her window and saw a clear blue sky and
bright sunshine, she made a telephone call to her grand-daughter Emma.

'Would you like to bring Sophie for a day out at New Brighton today?
It is such a lovely day and being near the seaside would be fun'

'That is a nice idea Nanna' said Emma, 'we would love to come.  See you soon'.

'Wear jackets, the sea breezes may be cool' .  (illustrated on opp page, on telephones)

When Emma and Sophie arrived hand in hand at Nanna's front door, carrying red
beach buckets in their other hands, Sophie looked anxiously at her. (illustration opp page)

Emma said 'Nanna, Sophie is worried. She calls you Nanna Strawberry because
she cannot say your name Audrey.'

     '\Oh' exclaimed Nanna ,
'I think 'Nanna Strawberry' is a wonderful name!
I like it very much.  Thank you Sophie.'

And so from that magical moment she became
              'Nanna Strawberry'
to her happy gleeful great grand-daughter           (illustration shows Sophie's excitement).

REMAINDER of story describes bus and ferry journeys to New Brighton,
fish and chips, sandpies on beach next to seaside on River Mersey.
All accompanied by Sophie frequently calling 'Nanna Strawberry',
Young boy collects sea shells for Sophie, using her red bucket.
( Ilustrated on opp page and on colourful front cover.)

CONCLUSION TO STORY on return to Nanna's house.

'Goodbye Nanna Strawberry' called out Sophie in her happy gleeful voice,
                               waving from the car.

Nanna Strawberry gave a big smile and waved back.    (illustration, waving to Sophie in car)
She was very happy with her new name
        'NANNA STRAWBERRY'.
She liked it very much, Clever little Sophie for thinking of it.  (End of story)

Books 2 to 11 were to follow in suceeding months drawing from Audrey's experience
of fun events enjoyed by children and herself throughout her long life.
Book 12 still in progress, the final story in this first series.

See Update Spider and The Fly

ALERT TO NEW AUTHORS:
Despite still refusing to discuss this matter with me as the responsible person,
ie author, publisher, copyright holder, Amazon have renewed their exhorbitant charges
of £606.96 for return delivery of unsold Nanna Strawberry Stories, at February 2019
with an additional charge of £133.00 for further storage and  returns in September 2019.
I had paid just under £100 for DELIVERING a total of 11 boxes of books to Amason's
collection point  over 11 months and could not have anticipated the huge charge for
return of unsold books by carrier from all parts of the United Kingdom over several days !

It is beyond my control that they omitted to return the later books amongst February
returns !  Ir is also beyond my control that they refused to communicate with me
as author and publisher, simply on the grounds that I had asked my grand-daughter
to do the IT work involved when resgistering the stories with Amazon.  They are
therefore holding her as the financially responsible person. Outrageous !   I am the
responsible person they should have communicated with in the circumstances.
So to new Authors everywhere, I say, be alert and beware of Amazon techniques.

I will consider prompt payment of a more reasonable agreed amount once I, not my
helpful grand-daughter,  am recognised as the financially responsible person.

UNEXPECTED TOKEN OF APPRECIATON

Having had a lovely birthday afternoon with great granddaughter Sophie, age 6 two weeks ago,
en route  home I was drawn to the Sunday Roast noticeboards outside some inviting roadside
inns. The thought came to me that a savoury roast dinner was just what I needed after an
afternoon indulging in sugary treats.  So I duly chose an inn, went inside to find a table for one,
then cash in hand I went to the bar to request a roast beef dinner. "Sorry" said the barman, "roast
dinners are sold out".  Overcoming my disappointment I returned to my table to restudy the menu.
A gentleman who had observed the above, came to me and asked in a friendly manner "Do you
know what you are having yet?".  "Yes, I have decided on a four ounce steak with chips which will
be just fine for me". So I returned to the bar holding out a ten pound note. The barman declined it.
"That gentleman who was here has just paid for your meal" said the busy barman. I felt very
touched by this kindness, but also rather embarrassed at not even being able to thank the kind
 stranger.

.So I went out to my car and located a copy of a Nanna Strawberry book. I inscribed the message
'Thank you for my treat.  Please accept this little book as a gift from me'  'Nanna Strawberry'
I went in search of the gentleman and his family. He was not at their table but the book was
received on his behalf.  My very tasty steak was delivered, and I tucked into it with enjoyment.
Then my kind unknown friend returned to my table to tell me the dinner was a token of his warm
appreciation for all that I did for the schoolchildren of Knowsley ! He described himself as an
Ambassador for Knowsley and told me "We know about your visits and how the children have
really enjoyed them" and various other complimentary remarks, which I found very uplifting and encouraging.  So it once again proves that none of us know what the stranger amongst us may
have experienced about us, or who is aware of our own individual input into society.
I responded by truthfully affirming that I thoroughly enjoyed  my unforseen involvement with
schools, their teachers and hundreds of delightful memorable children who never failed to impress
me by their interest and questions about my Nanna Strawberry stories.

Thank you Sophie for inspiring me to write the first, succeeded to date by ten more, with the final
one alsmost ready for print, and I again wish you  "Happy 6th birthday" and exciting year with lots
of new experiences as a six year old !

Who knows what you will have achieved by the time you are 80+ !!

None of us do !!   Life is an ever opening new adventure.

Thank you again, Mr Ambassador for Knowsley, and every good wish to one and all for the future

KIRKBY LIBRARY THURS 15TH AUGUST 11AM

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME ALONG !

Nanna Strawberry described some of her books and read one of them,
'Nanna Strawberry Reads Stories To Sophie' to a lovely gathering of
children accompanied by parents or grandparents who all participated in
guessing the clues to the names of stories which Sophie had stopped Nanna
Strawberry from reading, because, for example,  "I do not l ike porridge" !
Can YOU guess the title of that story ?

Children then enjoyed the Fairy Tale Quiz by Children's Librarian, Gerry,
and her Picture Quiz which they later coloured in.

Great fun, all free, enjoying books during summer holidays.

Nanna Strawberry was very pleased when some children became the happy
owners of one or more of her stories books. She always feels great when
someone likes her books enough to buy one of them !  The money will also
help her to publish Book No 12 'Nanna Strawberry Goes To a Wedding'.

Nanna also thanks Gerry for giving her a car lift to and from Kirkby Library
and for all her assistance. She donated three of her stories to Knowsley Libraries
in appreciation for inviting her to take part in their Summer book reading activities.

Love and bes wishes from author Audrey Wilson 'Nanna Strawberry' x

PRESCOT LIBRARY HOLIDAY QUIZ

Childnre's Librarian, Gerry, kindly collected Nanna Strawberry from her home
for the free holiday activity at Prescot Library.

We were pleased that Tabitha attended with her Mum. Clearly very keen on
reading story books, and hearing Nanna Strawberry read her book
'Nanna Strawberry Tells Stories to Sophie'. Tabitha took part in answering
Nanna Strawberry's  questions about the fairy tales Sophie had stopped her from
reading.  Remember them?  "Do not like giants" "Do not like porridge" and so on.
Clever Tabitha guessed all the titles correctly.  Then she took part in the Quiz prepared
by Ginny.  Again very successfully.  We learned that Tabitha holds lots of ambitions for
the future... to be a fireman,  or one of several other professions.

Nanna Strawberry told her she thought that Tabitha was going to be a famous author.
She was very good at creating characters in her mind, so could write some wonderful
stories about a fireman, or a doctor, etc. Despite only having Tabitha with us for this
holiday activity, we could not have had a more intelligent and interested little girl with us
to share our activities.

Thank you Tabitha, and your lovely Mum for all her encouragement to you.
Love Nanna Strawberry and Gerry.  (Next at Kirkby Library, 15th August 11am).

HOLLY LODGE SUMMER SCHOOL

Nanna Strawberry thoroughly enjpyed her visit to
Holly Lodge Summer School yesterday, Thursday 25th
for readings and activities from Nanna Strawberry Books.

There was good interaction from the pupils who will be
attending Holly Lodge Girls College in September and had
therefore been invited to Summer School to meet each other

One lively girl described her dance experiences in New Brighton
and the opportunity on one occasion to have a look inside
its lighthouse on the shore.  She described climbing steps,
upward and  round and round to the top of the lighthouse.
It was good to learn that this well known lighthouse in New
Brighton is open to the public from time to time.

At the conclusion of Nanna Strawberry's readings and
questions, she was invited to present each participant with
a pre-prepared inscribed copy of  her book, No.6 in series,
Nanna Strawberry Remembers The Young Queen...and schooldays.

Her own schooldays were first at Winstone Road Primary School
(now Dovecot Primary School, on a different site) then at
Grant Road Secondary Modern (now site of Dovecot P S)
then to Holly Lodge High School for Girls (now called
Holly Lodge Girls College and in newly built premises in
former grounds of Uplands at Holly Lodge High School).

She  told her  young audience that she clearly recalled her
own first day at Holly Lodge, where new pupils were
gathered outside Sandheyes, and her mother led her to a
group of girls and said "This is Audrey, what are your names?"
Embarrassing as that was, she was now glad to report that,
amazingly, three of those girls have remained her life long friends
despite being dispersed in their future lives and following
different careers.  She hoped that many of the girls present
were now beginning lifelong friendships which may one day
even be passed on to their own children befriending each other.
There is something rather special in having friends who remember
their shared schooldays in youth, and growing maturity.

My thanks to Mrs Debbie Rhodes for liaising with me and
her assistance during my visit.

Love and best wishes to everyone at Holly Lodge,
from
